Culture of the Area

Dumfries & Galloway, in the South-West of Scotland, is a largely undiscovered place.
It is the place where the very first people in Scotland arrived, many thousand of years ago.

The region is home to many different towns and villages, each with their own character and attractions.  There is a wealth of castles, abbeys, museums, festivals and outdoor pursuits all over the region.
No matter what your tastes and interests are, there will be something in the area to suit you.

Some of these are listed below:

  • The Southern Upland Way  - this is Britain’s first coast-to-coast long distance footpath. (www.southernuplandway.com)
  • Robert Burns Centre – located in Dumfries is the former house of Scotland’s national poet, his burial place and also a museum dedicated to his life.
  • David Coulthard Museum – a museum of the current Formula 1 driver, who is a native of the area. (www.davidcoulthardmuseum.co.uk)
  • John Paul Jones Cottage – birthplace of the man who founded the US Navy.
  • Drumlanrig Castle & Country Park – castle and present home of the Duke of Buccleuch.
  • The Wickerman Festival – Scotland’s hugely popular ‘Aleternative Music Festival’ (www.thewickermanfestival.co.uk)
  • Bladnoch Distillery – take a tour round the region’s largest Whisky distillery and sample some of the products. (www.bladnoch.co.uk)
  • Golf – Scotland is the home of golf and Dumfries & Galloway has over 30 golf courses, from small courses to professional championship courses.
  • Cycling – the region has many possibilities for cycling, whether it be in the forests or on the British ‘National Cycle Route’.
  • Sailing and Watersports – these are available either on the many lochs (lakes) or from points along the region’s 200-mile coastline.

The list of possibilities for tourist visits and activities is endless.
